Known as a natural source of energy, carob molasses offers a healthy alternative for breakfasts, desserts, and daily consumption.
The Kazafana brand is dedicated to preserving Cyprus’s local treasures and bringing this unique flavor to your table.
What is Carob?
Although its English name is “carob,” it is commonly known as “St. John’s Bread.” In German, it is called “Johannisbrot.” In both languages, the meaning is “Bread of Prophet Jacob.” It is a fruit that Prophet Jacob consumed in the desert instead of bread and has been known for approximately 5,000 years.
Until a few centuries ago, carob was widely used instead of sugar or in sweet preparations. This tradition and healthy dietary practice disappeared with the rise of modern white sugar production.
The carob tree does not bear fruit for its first 15 years. A mature tree can produce up to 1,000 kilograms of fruit.
One of the most important properties of carob is its effectiveness against shortness of breath. The active compound in carob that addresses breathing difficulties is almost unique to this plant. This compound can also be highly effective in certain allergic asthma conditions, producing immediate results in some cases. Additionally, it can be applied successfully to breathing problems caused by allergies.
The health benefits of carob are numerous. Some of them include:
Pain relief
Anti-allergy
Anti-asthma
Antibacterial
Protection against bronchitis
Anti-cancer
Detoxifying the liver
Eliminating free radicals
Strengthening the immune system
Antimicrobial
Antiseptic
Protective against cancer
Relief from diarrhea and constipation
Eliminating nitrosamines
Bronchodilator
Protection against polio in children
Carob is also used as a thickening agent in foods, labeled as E410.
An additional advantage is that carob contains no cholesterol. Since it also lacks caffeine and theobromine, it can be safely consumed by people with blood pressure issues. Carob is rich in phosphorus and calcium, making it an excellent natural support for those with osteoporosis to meet their calcium needs.
Properties and Nutritional Value of Carob
Carob trees can grow up to 10 meters in height. They have a broad crown and a thick trunk. The bark is brown and rough, and the branches are quite sturdy. The compound leaves are arranged oppositely, measuring 10–20 cm in length, with droplet-shaped tips. The flowers are small, numerous, light greenish-red, and 6–12 cm long. The legume (pod) is brownish-purple, shiny, flat, and 10–30 cm in length. The mesocarp (middle layer) of the fruit is soft and sweet when fresh. Each pod contains about fifteen flat seeds with hard shells. The seeds contain a substance called Trigosol.
